SUMMARY:Annual Conference - The Efficacy of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: A Lecture and Clinical Workshop. Keynote Speaker: Jonathan Shedler\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/167919326225 \nWCSPP Annual Conference\nTHE EFFICACY OF PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY: A LECTURE AND CLINICAL WORKSHOP \n4 CE CREDITS AVAILABLE \nKeynote speaker: Jonathan Shedler\, PhD \nModerated by: John Turtz\, PhD \nDr. Shedler will conduct live supervision sessions with Melissa Capozzi\, LCSW and Matthew Korner\, PsyD \nOverview\nPsychodynamic therapy is an evidence-based treatment. In the first half of the lecture — based on the internationally acclaimed article\, The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy — Dr. Shedler will describe the seven core features of contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy in clear\, jargon-free language. \nDr. Shedler will discuss scientific evidence for the benefits of psychodynamic therapy and how it compares to other evidence-based treatments like CBT and antidepressant medication. Dr. Shedler will also describe how the active ingredients of all effective psychotherapies draw on (often unacknowledged) psychodynamic principles\, such as enhancing self-knowledge\, identifying problematic relationship patterns\, and addressing these patterns in the “here and now” of the therapy relationship. \nThe second half of the conference program will have a practical\, hands-on clinical focus\, building on concepts from Dr. Shedler’s lecture. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of contemporary psychodynamic therapy through clinical case presentations by workshop participants with case discussion\, “live” clinical supervision\, and role playing to demonstrate clinical interventions. Dr. Shedler will emphasize the role of clinical case formulation as a road map to effective psychodynamic treatment. \nPresenters\nAmerican psychologist Jonathan Shedler\, PHD is known internationally as an author\, consultant\, and master clinician and teacher\, and is the 2021 recipient of IPA’s “Extraordinarily Meritorious Service to the International Psychoanalytic Association” award. \nHis article The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy won worldwide acclaim for firmly establishing psychoanalytic therapy as an evidence-based treatment. \nDr. Shedler’s research and writing are shaping contemporary views of personality syndromes and their treatment. He is author of numerous scientific and scholarly articles\, creator of the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) for personality diagnosis and clinical case formulation\, and co-author of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2). \nHe has more than 25 years’ experience teaching and supervising psychologists\, psychiatrists\, and psychoanalysts. \nDr. Shedler lectures internationally\, leads workshops for professional audiences\, consults to U.S. and international government agencies\, and provides expert clinical consultation to mental health professionals worldwide. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California\, San Francisco (UCSF)\, faculty member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis\, and Consulting Supervisor at California Pacific Medical Center. \nJohn Turtz\, PHD is teaching and supervisory faculty at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (WCSPP). He is the Co-director of the Foundations and Advanced Programs in Psychoanalysis and was former Director of the Couples Therapy Program at WCSPP. He is faculty\, supervisor\, and former Co-director at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. In addition\, Dr. Turtz is faculty at the New York Medical College and is in private practice in Larchmont and Manhattan. \nMelissa Capozzi\, LCSW is currently a candidate in the Advanced Psychoanalytic Program at WCSPP and is a recent graduate of the Foundations Program. Melissa studied creative writing and film at Pace University and received her Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. For the past five years she has worked as a school-based therapist\, providing adolescents individual and group counseling. She sees patients privately in Westchester. \nMatthew Korner\, PSYD is a graduate of the advanced psychoanalytic training program at WCSPP. He is a Supervising Psychologist at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology\, Yeshiva University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in rehabilitation psychology and neuropsychology at the Rusk Institute\, NYU Langone Medical Center. He is director of Union Square Psychology. His private practice offices are located in Pleasantville\, NY and at Union Square\, NYC.
