SUMMARY:Scientific Meeting -- Storytelling and the Experience of Talk Therapy: Notes on the Possible and the Impossible
DESCRIPTION:2 CE Hours available for\nNY LCSWs\, LMSWs\, LPs\, LMFTs\, LMHCs\, LCATs \nSTORYTELLING AND THE EXPERIENCE OF TALK THERAPY: NOTES ON THE POSSIBLE AND THE IMPOSSIBLE \nLive Webinar! \nCLAIRE BASESCU\, Ph.D.\n \nFriday\, OCTOBER 2\, 2020\n7:30 – 9:30 p.m. \nAdmission including CE: $30 \n\nTO REGISTER: \nhttps://register.gotowebinar.com/register/3797273767002816270 \nThis webinar is live\, real-time and interactive \nPowered by GoToWebinar \nPresented by the Psychoanalytic Association of WCSPP \nThis paper addresses multiple aspects of storytelling and narrative in relation to talk therapy. It is an essayistic exploration of the collaborative meaning-making nature of the therapy conversation. All theory\, all case presentations\, all interpretive organizing of experience\, are forms of narrative storytelling based in the subjectivity of analyst and patient\, mediated by language. Also of interest are the complex motivations for talking\, the need for solitude\, and both the need for and fear of human communication. While the essay is mostly literary and clinical\, Ricoeur’s theory of hermeneutics provides theoretical support for these explorations. \nClaire Basescu is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Greenwich Village. She is a Graduate and Supervisor of Psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute and was formerly on the Editorial Board of the Journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis. She is the author of articles that combine scholarly\, clinical\, and creative writing on such topics as divorce\, parenthood\, abortion\, solitude\, and therapy\, particularly the experience of the therapist. She taught a seminar based on the TV show “In Treatment” and has also published poetry. \nCONTINUING EDUCATION – 2 CE HOURS \nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to: \n1. Explain the theory of psychotherapy as a collaborative meaning making endeavor between two equally subjective participants.\n2. Describe the power of narrative in psychotherapy.\n3. Describe how political and cultural forces influence personal narratives.\n4. Explain Ricoeur’s theory of hermeneutics. \nTeaching Methods: \nLecture Presentation; Question and Answer \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy is recognized by NY State Education Department’s State Board of Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Clinical Social Workers # 00063; Licensed Psychoanalysts # P-0027; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists #MFT-0040; Licensed Mental Health Counselors #MHC-0075; and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists #CAT-0028. \nA completed survey must be submitted after the meeting for 2 CE hours. \nWho should attend: Psychiatrists\, psychologists\, social workers\, psychoanalysts\, other mental health professionals\, nurses\, graduate students.

SUMMARY:"Good Trouble\, Necessary Trouble:" A Monthly Conversation about Race (members only)
DESCRIPTION:The Diversity Committee invites you to join us for: \n“Good Trouble\, Necessary Trouble:” A Monthly Conversation about Race \n*Due to the significant number of outages that remain in our area following Tuesday’s storm\, this month’s conversation about race has been rescheduled to take place on Sunday\, August 23rd. \nFor our first time out\, we’ll use a podcast from “On Being”  as our jumping-off point after a brief description of how we at WCSPP have gotten here. \nWhen:  August 23th at 4:30 pm \nWhere:  Zoom \nWho:  Irene Studwell and Julie Willstatter—Introduction; Wade Anderson—Moderator \nPlease RSVP to Irene Studwell\n istudwell@gmail.com \nLink to podcast:  \nhttps://onbeing.org/programs/resmaa-menakem-notice-the-rage-notice-the-silence/ \nResmaa Menakem \n‘Notice the Rage; Notice the Silence’ \nThe best laws and diversity training have not gotten us anywhere near where we want to go. Therapist and trauma specialist Resmaa Menakem is working with old wisdom and very new science about our bodies and nervous systems\, and all we condense into the word “race.” Krista Tippett sat down with him in Minneapolis\, where they both live and work\, before the pandemic lockdown began. In this heartbreaking moment\, after the killing of George Floyd and the history it carries\, Resmaa Menakem’s practices offer us the beginning to change at a cellular level.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:RSVP: Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy & Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program Open House Via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Please Join Our VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE via ZOOM \nAbout Our Training Programs \nWCSPP offers two adult training programs: a two-year training experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy and also an intensive course of study and immersion into contemporary psychoanalysis. Each of these certificate programs provides excellent hands-on education and training in the theory and practice of psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis. The programs are designed to enhance a clinician’s understanding of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking in their work place and/or private practice. The training hones the candidate’s existing capacities to “see”\, feel\, and understand the multiple levels of meaningful human interaction in the consulting room. \nGrowing empirical evidence is clear that “deep therapeutic work”–like the kind offered at WCSPP–promotes change and growth in patients that is more substantial and longer lasting than in short-term\, singularly focused or behavioral treatments. \nThe Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program is a two-year program designed to provide candidates with a solid theoretical and clinical base in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A three-pronged approach is used\, which includes coursework\, personal therapy\, and consultation/supervision with a number of master clinicians who are a part of the WCSPP Faculty. Candidates will learn how to better recognize aspects of their work that are occurring outside the conscious awareness of the patient (or even the clinician) and how to use this expanded understanding in a dynamic\, transformative way. \nThe Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program is open to graduates of the Foundations Program and/or an equivalent program at another training institute. The Advanced course is an additional three-year program (beyond the Foundations program) that provides further in-depth training in psychoanalysis. The training consists of the concurrent participation in didactic course work\, supervised clinical work\, and a personal psychoanalysis. Such an intense immersion enables the candidate to transform experientially and deeply understand the empirical basis of theoretical formulations and to develop analytic skill in the conceptualization and execution of psychoanalytic work. \nWho is eligible and should apply? \nApplicants must be licensed Masters or Doctoral-level mental health professionals: M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Psy.D.\, LCSW\, NP\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC\, LMFT \nCE Credits will be offered for coursework.\nFinancial Aid is available for those who qualify. \nTimeline: \nRolling admissions with decisions made by July 30\, 2020 \nProgram begins September 8th\, 2020* \n**WCSPP PLANS TO CONTINUE ONLINE LEARNING UNTIL CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGE\, BUT AT LEAST UNTIL SPRING 2021. \nWe’d love to have you become part of our community… Come see what we are all about! \nRSVP For This Event!\nSubmit the form to RSVP.  You will receive a confirmation email.\n\n [gravityform id=”2″ title=”false” description=”false”]

SUMMARY:RSVP: Child\, Adolescent\, Parent Psychotherapy Training Program Open House via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:See faculty members supervise a current candidate on their on-going case. This live supervision will highlight training perspectives on both individual and parent work. \nOur program weaves together the study of individual child & adolescent\, and parent development through understanding the impact of psychological histories\, relational patterns\, intergenerational effects\, and changing social contexts and constructs. Training is based on a psychodynamic\, relational orientation to change\, integrating parent guidance and advice as needed. \nWe welcome all mental health practitioners\, whether your work is exclusive to children & adolescents\, primarily serves adults or some combination. We never forget that there is\, after all\, a child’s history within each adult and the challenge of growing within every child\, adult\, and parent. \nWho is eligible and should apply? \n
Applicants must be licensed Masters or Doctoral-level mental health professionals: M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Psy.D.\, LCSW\, NP\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC\, LMFT\, LQP \nPlease note: CE credits are available for coursework. SUMMARY:Diversity Book Group Presents Contemporary African-American Poets (members only event)
DESCRIPTION:Diversity Book Group Presents: \nContemporary African-American Poets \nJune 27\, 2020 \n10:00 – 10:15: Virtual Coffee\n10:15 – 11:15: Poetry Discussion\nThose who want to linger may. \nPlace: Your favorite Zoom Room! \nThe events of the last few weeks have asked and invited many of us to examine our biases\, our racism born out of the systemic\, embedded racism in our society. In response to this task the Diversity Committee is moving up the rescheduling our Covid-postponed Diversity Book Group “Contemporary African-American Poets” to June 27. \nPoetry compresses and focuses ideas and emotions. It can be intense and evocative. It is one of the arts that has the potential to help us transcend differences and can express in few words what prose can take whole books to convey. We will be reading the poetry of several contemporary African-American poets. It will be with the aid of these poets that we will have the opportunity\, in community\, to make meaning and to examine our own sentiments. \nThe poems will be sent to all who RSVP along with the Zoom link for this event. Some people have already received the poems\, but please let us know if you are newly joining us and need them. \nRSVP to lesliegibsonphd@gmail.com ASAP\, please with a deadline of 6/21. It takes us some time and effort to send out the poems and we want to be sure everyone has a chance to read. \nWe look forward to seeing you\, however virtual it may be.

SUMMARY:RSVP: WSCPP Zoom Series -- The Nuts and Bolts of Beginning and Growing a Private Practice: Practical Considerations and Unconscious Currents
DESCRIPTION:RSVP For This Event!\nSubmit the form to RSVP.  You will receive a confirmation email and Zoom link. \nThis workshop will deal with the practical considerations of dealing with insurance panels\, setting up an office\, marketing on the internet and within the community\, and establishing fees. It will then shift to more abstract issues of maintaining evenly suspended attention\, setting the frame\, answering direct personal questions\, and instilling a sense of curiosity. \nWilliam Behr\, LCSW is the former director of the Psychotherapy Training Program at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy\, as well as a faculty member and supervisor. He is also a supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. \n\n [gravityform id=”2″ title=”false” description=”false”]

SUMMARY:WCSPP ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2019 - 5 CE
DESCRIPTION:CLINICAL COMPLEXITIES:  How the Therapist’s Humanity Interacts with the Therapeutic Ideal\nKeynote Speakers\nIrwin Hirsch\, Ph.D. Marc Rehm\, Ph.D. Joyce Slochower\, Ph.D. Joye Weisel-Barth\, Ph.D.\nModerator Linda Fleischman\, LCSW\nSaturday\, November 23\, 2019 8:30 am – 3:00 pm\nRenaissance Hotel\n80 West Red Oak Lane West Harrison\, NY\n\nABOUT THIS CONFERENCE\nThe influence of the therapist’s unconscious participation in clinical work has often been examined. This conference will focus instead on the clinical and ethical considerations when therapists are conscious of their needs and desires and consider how their humanity potentially impacts the therapeutic dyad and the patient.\nFour experienced therapists will present papers illustrating treatments during which they thoughtfully explored how to understand the complex interaction between the therapist’s humanity and the therapeutic ideal.
