SUMMARY:RSVP: Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy & Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program Open House Via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Using the Dream as a Psychoanalytic Tool to Open Up and Explore: \nThe Patient’s Mind at Work \nJoin us as Dr. Aviva Gitlin\, WCSPP faculty\, takes us all on a live journey using our own unconscious responses in our work with DREAMS. \nAbout Our Training Programs \nWCSPP offers two adult training programs: a two-year training experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy and also an intensive course of study and immersion into contemporary psychoanalysis. Each of these certificate programs provides excellent hands-on education and training in the theory and practice of psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis. The programs are designed to enhance a clinician’s understanding of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking in their work place and/or private practice. The training hones the candidate’s existing capacities to “see”\, feel\, and understand the multiple levels of meaningful human interaction in the consulting room. \nGrowing empirical evidence is clear that “deep therapeutic work”–like the kind offered at WCSPP–promotes change and growth in patients that is more substantial and longer lasting than in short-term\, singularly focused or behavioral treatments. \nThe Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program is a two-year program designed to provide candidates with a solid theoretical and clinical base in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A three-pronged approach is used\, which includes coursework\, personal therapy\, and consultation/supervision with a number of master clinicians who are a part of the WCSPP Faculty. Candidates will learn how to better recognize aspects of their work that are occurring outside the conscious awareness of the patient (or even the clinician) and how to use this expanded understanding in a dynamic\, transformative way. \nThe Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program is open to graduates of the Foundations Program and/or an equivalent program at another training institute. The Advanced course is an additional three-year program (beyond the Foundations program) that provides further in-depth training in psychoanalysis. The training consists of the concurrent participation in didactic course work\, supervised clinical work\, and a personal psychoanalysis. Such an intense immersion enables the candidate to transform experientially and deeply understand the empirical basis of theoretical formulations and to develop analytic skill in the conceptualization and execution of psychoanalytic work. \nAviva Gitlin\, Psy.D. is the chair of the curriculum committee and on the faculty of WCSPP. She is Past President of the WCSPP Psychoanalytic Association. She is an Adjunct Faculty and Supervisor at the Ferkauf School of Psychology at Yeshiva University. Dr. Gitlin has Certificates in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy from WCSPP. \nWho is eligible and should apply? \n
Applicants must be licensed Masters or Doctoral-level mental health professionals: M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Psy.D.\, LCSW\, NP\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC\, LMFT \nCE Credits will be offered for coursework.\nFinancial Aid is available for those who qualify. \nTimeline: \nRolling admissions with decisions made by July 30\, 2020 \nProgram begins September 8th\, 2020* \n*WCSPP PLANS TO RETURN TO IN-PERSON CLASSES IN THE FALL\, HOWEVER WE ARE PREPARED TO OFFER ON-LINE LEARNING AS NECESSARY. \nWe’d love to have you become part of our community… Come see what we are all about! \nRSVP For This Event!\nSubmit the form to RSVP.  You will receive a confirmation email.\n\n [gravityform id=”2″ title=”false” description=”false”]

SUMMARY:Diversity Book Group Presents Contemporary African-American Poets (members only event)
DESCRIPTION:Diversity Book Group Presents: \nContemporary African-American Poets \nJune 27\, 2020 \n10:00 – 10:15: Virtual Coffee\n10:15 – 11:15: Poetry Discussion\nThose who want to linger may. \nPlace: Your favorite Zoom Room! \nThe events of the last few weeks have asked and invited many of us to examine our biases\, our racism born out of the systemic\, embedded racism in our society. In response to this task the Diversity Committee is moving up the rescheduling our Covid-postponed Diversity Book Group “Contemporary African-American Poets” to June 27. \nPoetry compresses and focuses ideas and emotions. It can be intense and evocative. It is one of the arts that has the potential to help us transcend differences and can express in few words what prose can take whole books to convey. We will be reading the poetry of several contemporary African-American poets. It will be with the aid of these poets that we will have the opportunity\, in community\, to make meaning and to examine our own sentiments. \nThe poems will be sent to all who RSVP along with the Zoom link for this event. Some people have already received the poems\, but please let us know if you are newly joining us and need them. \nRSVP to lesliegibsonphd@gmail.com ASAP\, please with a deadline of 6/21. It takes us some time and effort to send out the poems and we want to be sure everyone has a chance to read. \nWe look forward to seeing you\, however virtual it may be.

SUMMARY:"Good Trouble\, Necessary Trouble:" A Monthly Conversation about Race (members only)
DESCRIPTION:The Diversity Committee invites you to join us for: \n“Good Trouble\, Necessary Trouble:” A Monthly Conversation about Race \n*Due to the significant number of outages that remain in our area following Tuesday’s storm\, this month’s conversation about race has been rescheduled to take place on Sunday\, August 23rd. \nFor our first time out\, we’ll use a podcast from “On Being”  as our jumping-off point after a brief description of how we at WCSPP have gotten here. \nWhen:  August 23th at 4:30 pm \nWhere:  Zoom \nWho:  Irene Studwell and Julie Willstatter—Introduction; Wade Anderson—Moderator \nPlease RSVP to Irene Studwell\n istudwell@gmail.com \nLink to podcast:  \nhttps://onbeing.org/programs/resmaa-menakem-notice-the-rage-notice-the-silence/ \nResmaa Menakem \n‘Notice the Rage; Notice the Silence’ \nThe best laws and diversity training have not gotten us anywhere near where we want to go. Therapist and trauma specialist Resmaa Menakem is working with old wisdom and very new science about our bodies and nervous systems\, and all we condense into the word “race.” Krista Tippett sat down with him in Minneapolis\, where they both live and work\, before the pandemic lockdown began. In this heartbreaking moment\, after the killing of George Floyd and the history it carries\, Resmaa Menakem’s practices offer us the beginning to change at a cellular level.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Scientific Meeting -- Storytelling and the Experience of Talk Therapy: Notes on the Possible and the Impossible
DESCRIPTION:2 CE Hours available for\nNY LCSWs\, LMSWs\, LPs\, LMFTs\, LMHCs\, LCATs \nSTORYTELLING AND THE EXPERIENCE OF TALK THERAPY: NOTES ON THE POSSIBLE AND THE IMPOSSIBLE \nLive Webinar! \nCLAIRE BASESCU\, Ph.D.\n \nFriday\, OCTOBER 2\, 2020\n7:30 – 9:30 p.m. \nAdmission including CE: $30 \n\nTO REGISTER: \nhttps://register.gotowebinar.com/register/3797273767002816270 \nThis webinar is live\, real-time and interactive \nPowered by GoToWebinar \nPresented by the Psychoanalytic Association of WCSPP \nThis paper addresses multiple aspects of storytelling and narrative in relation to talk therapy. It is an essayistic exploration of the collaborative meaning-making nature of the therapy conversation. All theory\, all case presentations\, all interpretive organizing of experience\, are forms of narrative storytelling based in the subjectivity of analyst and patient\, mediated by language. Also of interest are the complex motivations for talking\, the need for solitude\, and both the need for and fear of human communication. While the essay is mostly literary and clinical\, Ricoeur’s theory of hermeneutics provides theoretical support for these explorations. \nClaire Basescu is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Greenwich Village. She is a Graduate and Supervisor of Psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute and was formerly on the Editorial Board of the Journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis. She is the author of articles that combine scholarly\, clinical\, and creative writing on such topics as divorce\, parenthood\, abortion\, solitude\, and therapy\, particularly the experience of the therapist. She taught a seminar based on the TV show “In Treatment” and has also published poetry. \nCONTINUING EDUCATION – 2 CE HOURS \nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to: \n1. Explain the theory of psychotherapy as a collaborative meaning making endeavor between two equally subjective participants.\n2. Describe the power of narrative in psychotherapy.\n3. Describe how political and cultural forces influence personal narratives.\n4. Explain Ricoeur’s theory of hermeneutics. \nTeaching Methods: \nLecture Presentation; Question and Answer \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy is recognized by NY State Education Department’s State Board of Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Clinical Social Workers # 00063; Licensed Psychoanalysts # P-0027; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists #MFT-0040; Licensed Mental Health Counselors #MHC-0075; and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists #CAT-0028. \nA completed survey must be submitted after the meeting for 2 CE hours. \nWho should attend: Psychiatrists\, psychologists\, social workers\, psychoanalysts\, other mental health professionals\, nurses\, graduate students.

SUMMARY:Community Forum - The End of the Hour: A Therapist's Reflections on Closing a Practice
DESCRIPTION:Community Forum \nTHE END OF THE HOUR:\nA THERAPIST’S REFLECTIONS ON CLOSING A PRACTICE \nSharon Medoff Picard\, LCSW\n \nSaturday November 14th\, 2020\n9:30 – 11:30 a.m.\nAdmission: $30 \n2 CEU credits offered to\nLCSWs\, LMSWs\, LPs\, LMFTs\, LMHCs\, and LCATs \nON ZOOM! \nMORE INFORMATION TO FOLLOW \nRSVP to:\nAssistant@wcspp.org\n845 867-7318 \nTo pay by credit card go to wcspp.org/register \nTo pay by check addressed to WCSPP\, please mail to:\nZoe\nPO Box 997\nMillbrook\, NY 12545 \nChoosing to close a private practice carries profound ramifications for therapist and patients. Generally\, our patients leave us. Usually—and ideally—through a mutually constructed and thoughtful termination process. Sometimes\, terminations are marked by an abrupt rupture; with rare exceptions\, however\, these\, too\, are at the behest of the patient. In addition\, for most of us\, a termination is accompanied by the understanding that a patient is welcome to return should the need arise. Choosing to close up shop for personal reasons involves interrupting ongoing work\, disappointing and angering patients and stirring up abandonment issues. As well\, for the therapist\, it involves separating from a deeply cherished identity. \nWith reference to some of the limited available literature\, this presentation will address the conundrums of making such a choice\, the dilemmas facing the therapist\, the theme of loss and the arc of the work during the months between the announcement and termination. \nDiscussion will invite commentary from therapists dealing with the prospect of closing a practice since the onset of the pandemic. A time when all the anticipated affects and quandaries are made more awkward and delicate and when an imposed sense of crisis may infuse the process. \nSharon Medoff Picard\, LCSW is a faculty member at WCSPP and a former director of their Adult Psychotherapy Training Program. She recently closed her private practice but remains involved with training and supervision. \nCONTINUING EDUCATION – 2 CE CONTACT HOURS \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy is recognized by NY State Education Department’s State Board of Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Clinical Social Workers # 00063; Licensed Psychoanalysts # P-0027; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists #MFT-0040; Licensed Mental Health Counselors #MHC-0075; and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists #CAT-0028. \nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to:\n1) Discuss the impact of choosing to close a practice on both patients and therapist.\n2) Describe the themes that mark the period of transition between the announcement of the closing of a practice and the final termination.\n3 ) Describe the impact of closing a practice on the identity of the therapist. \nTeaching method: \nPresentation of paper followed by group discussion \nA completed survey must be submitted at the end of the community forum. \nWho should attend: Psychiatrists\, psychologists\, social workers\, psychoanalysts\, other mental health professionals\, nurses\, graduate students.

SUMMARY:WCSPP Annual Conference - Gender Dysphoria: At the Intersection of Culture and Clinical Practice
DESCRIPTION:WCSPP’s Annual Conference this year will be a webinar offering 3 CE hours \nGENDER DYSPHORIA: At the Intersection of Culture and Clinical Practice \nRegister by clicking here! \nView the 2020 Conference Brochure \nKeynote Speakers:\nDavid Schwartz\, PhD Clinical and ethical considerations in the treatment of gender dysphoric children and adolescents: When doing less is helping more \nLaurel Silber\, PsyD A child’s developing gender subjectivity in the context of attachment concerns with implications for psychotherapy \nAt this extraordinary moment in time\, we are called upon to reconsider the ways we think and act across many spheres of life\, including race\, sexuality and gender. In this conference\, gender will take center stage as we strive to expand our understanding of gender dysphoric children within the larger context of their families and culture. \nAs challenged children and families look to clinicians for guidance\, it is the intention of this conference to contribute to a better and more complex understanding of the issues children and their families face. \nDr. David Schwartz’s presentation will explore the present state of treatment of children and adolescents who identify as transgender or who experience gender dysphoria. Special attention will be given to the effects of contemporary cultural pressure\, practitioner bias and parental anxiety as these three interact. Dr. Schwartz will emphasize the importance of an empathic\, non-directive clinical stance\, including engagement with parents\, as the key to offering a treatment that is ethically informed and therapeutically effective. \nDr. Laurel Silber’s presentation explores new clinical and theoretical questions arising in child/family psychotherapy relative to cultural shifts and gender variance. What have we learned from the children? Play therapy is well suited to the task of sorting the self. Children engage in play to organize feelings and experience\, to make meaning and find belonging within their attachment system. What changes in the intergenerational narrative as some children\, seeking coherency\, explore boundaries and resist binaries for categorization? As adults\, we will be reflecting on what is different and the same as we hold in mind gender subjectivity and discover some surprises within our open dialogue. \nThe webinar will continue with questions and discussion with all participants. \nRegistration and Fees Fee is $75\, which includes 3 CE hours. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Requests for a refund MUST be received by email or letter by November 7\, 2020\, for full refund\, less a $25 processing fee. \nContinuing Education:\nNYS Mental Health Practitioners: WCSPP is recognized by the NYS Education Department’s State Board of Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of Continuing Education for Licensed Social Workers #SW-0063; Licensed Psychoanalysts #P-0027; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists #MFT-0040; Licensed Mental Health Counselors #MHC-0075; and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists #CAT-0028. \nCT Social Workers and Other Mental Health Practitioners: CE hours approved. \nPsychologists: The Westchester Center for Psychological Education (WCPE) is a co-sponsor of this programs with WCSPP. SUMMARY:Scientific Meeting: Secrets and Lies in Psychotherapy\, Barry Farber\, Ph.D. (2 CE Hours Available)
DESCRIPTION:Scientific Meeting \n2 CE Hours available for\nNY LCSWs\, LMSWs\, LPs\, LMFTs\, LMHCs\, LCATs \nSECRETS AND LIES IN PSYCHOTHERAPY \nLive Webinar! \nBARRY FARBER\, Ph.D. \nAdmission including CE: $30 \nTO REGISTER: \nhttps://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8209733777429935629 \nThis webinar is live\, real-time and interactive \nPowered by GoToWebinar \nPresented by the Psychoanalytic Association of WCSPP \nIn every context of their lives\, people lie and have secrets. Even in psychotherapy\, that space of near-absolute confidentiality\, clients lie and keep secrets. Often\, though not always\, these lies and secrets significantly interfere with therapeutic progress and good outcome. Often\, therapists have little or no awareness of the extent to which clients have been far from truthful with them. \nThis presentation\, based on recent studies by the speaker and his research team\, provides an overview of the most common client lies told in therapy\, clients’ stated reasons for them\, the perceived consequences of them\, and clients’ ideas about what therapists might do to facilitate more honest disclosure. Three of the most common lies (and the motives for them) will be emphasized: suicidal ideation; sexual thoughts and behavior; and client feelings about their therapist and the progress of therapy. The last part of the presentation focuses on ways by which therapists can prevent (or at least minimize) the extent of lies and secrets in therapy\, as well as how they might deal with their inevitable expression. \nBarry A. Farber received his PhD from Yale University in 1978. The next year\, he became a member of the clinical psychology faculty at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, where he’s been ever since. Dr. Farber served as Director of Clinical Training at Teachers College for 24 years and has also served three stints as Department Chair. \nDr. Farber has varied interests within the area of psychotherapy research\, including the nature and consequences of therapists’ provision of positive regard\, and the extent to which patients\, therapists\, supervisors\, and supervisees honestly disclose to each other. His recent book\, Secrets and Lies in Psychotherapy\, co-authored by two of his graduate students\, grew out of a 2-year research project involving over 1\,000 patients who were asked about the secrets kept and lies told in their therapy. \nDr. Farber is also the author of Self-disclosure in Psychotherapy\, two books focusing on burnout in the helping professions\, and a book on Carl Rogers (The Psychotherapy of Carl Rogers: Cases and Commentary) as well as a book called Rock ‘n Roll Wisdom: What Psychologically Astute Lyrics Can Teach About Life and Love. \nCONTINUING EDUCATION – 2 CE HOURS \nTeaching Method: \nPower-Point presentation with ample opportunity for questions and discussion. \nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to: \n1. Participants will be able to identify the most common lies that clients tell in psychotherapy.\n2. Participants will be able to identify common and specific motives for these lies.\n3. Participants will be able to identify specific practices that facilitate honest disclosure in psychotherapy. \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy is recognized by NY State Education Department’s State Board of Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Clinical Social Workers #SW-0063; Licensed Psychoanalysts #P-0027; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists #MFT-0040; Licensed Mental Health Counselors #MHC-0075; and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists #CAT-0028. \nA completed survey must be submitted after the meeting for 2 CE hours. \nWho should attend: Psychiatrists\, psychologists\, social workers\, psychoanalysts\, other mental health professionals\, nurses\, graduate students.

SUMMARY:CAPP MINI COURSE: APPLICATIONS OF PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC TESTING IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN\, PARENTS\, AND EDUCATORS
DESCRIPTION:Therapists\, would you like to enhance your work with children and parents? \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Presents \nA CAPP MINI COURSE: \nAPPLICATIONS OF PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC TESTING IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN\, PARENTS\, AND EDUCATORS \nThis three-hour mini-course on testing is open to our current candidates and to anyone else in the community who might be interested in learning more about testing and ways it can be used clinically. \nInstructor:\nJudith T. Moskowitz\, Ph.D. \nTime and dates: 7pm\, February 2\, 9\, and 23\, 2021.\nCost: $75 \nZoom \nSPACE IS LIMITED! \nRSVP to Irene Studwell istudwell@gmail.com\nor Jane Bloomgarden jwillbloom@gmail.com \n* * * * *\nA neuropsychological evaluation aspires to answer the question: “Who is this child?” It is a process analysis of the cognitive/intellectual\, academic\, and emotional factors that characterize a child’s functioning. In 9-12 hours (plus the time for intake and feedback)\, it provides a bird’s eye view that can help a therapist understand intellectual capacity\, areas of cognitive strengths and weaknesses\, and academic skills and deficits. With projective tests\, it also gives a snapshot of ego functioning\, defenses\, and issues related to anxieties\, mood regulation\, and social perception. The findings can shorten the introductory phase of treatment\, and give the therapist insights that would take months to discover. \nThis mini course aims to help clinicians understand what testing entails\, and how its results can be effectively relayed\, and help inform clinical interventions. Viewed as a major intervention (akin to “crisis intervention”)\, it has the potential to change the narrative\, and reframe the way in which a child is viewed – by parents\, teachers\, and self. A clinical approach is consistently used in relating to both parents and child\, and establishing a therapeutic alliance. \nCase material will be used to describe a variety of clinical presentations – what they mean\, how they can shed light upon the interaction between neurobiological and emotional factors\, and how they contribute to development. These factors may also impact parent/child relationships and identification patterns\, result in misinterpretations\, and possibly derail the acquisition of a child’s positive sense of self. The following are some areas that can be explored: (a) ADHD and executive functioning (b) Impact of language disorders (c) Pseudo-stupidity (d) Mood disorders and emotional dysregulation (e) Early identification of serious psychiatric disorders (f) The adopted child and “the black box”. \nDr. Moskowitz is a neuropsychologist based in Ardsley and a graduate of the Adelphi Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.
