SUMMARY:Scientific Meeting: Secrets and Lies in Psychotherapy\, Barry Farber\, Ph.D. (2 CE Hours Available)
DESCRIPTION:Scientific Meeting \n2 CE Hours available for\nNY LCSWs\, LMSWs\, LPs\, LMFTs\, LMHCs\, LCATs \nSECRETS AND LIES IN PSYCHOTHERAPY \nLive Webinar! \nBARRY FARBER\, Ph.D. \nAdmission including CE: $30 \nTO REGISTER: \nhttps://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8209733777429935629 \nThis webinar is live\, real-time and interactive \nPowered by GoToWebinar \nPresented by the Psychoanalytic Association of WCSPP \nIn every context of their lives\, people lie and have secrets. Even in psychotherapy\, that space of near-absolute confidentiality\, clients lie and keep secrets. Often\, though not always\, these lies and secrets significantly interfere with therapeutic progress and good outcome. Often\, therapists have little or no awareness of the extent to which clients have been far from truthful with them. \nThis presentation\, based on recent studies by the speaker and his research team\, provides an overview of the most common client lies told in therapy\, clients’ stated reasons for them\, the perceived consequences of them\, and clients’ ideas about what therapists might do to facilitate more honest disclosure. Three of the most common lies (and the motives for them) will be emphasized: suicidal ideation; sexual thoughts and behavior; and client feelings about their therapist and the progress of therapy. The last part of the presentation focuses on ways by which therapists can prevent (or at least minimize) the extent of lies and secrets in therapy\, as well as how they might deal with their inevitable expression. \nBarry A. Farber received his PhD from Yale University in 1978. The next year\, he became a member of the clinical psychology faculty at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, where he’s been ever since. Dr. Farber served as Director of Clinical Training at Teachers College for 24 years and has also served three stints as Department Chair. \nDr. Farber has varied interests within the area of psychotherapy research\, including the nature and consequences of therapists’ provision of positive regard\, and the extent to which patients\, therapists\, supervisors\, and supervisees honestly disclose to each other. His recent book\, Secrets and Lies in Psychotherapy\, co-authored by two of his graduate students\, grew out of a 2-year research project involving over 1\,000 patients who were asked about the secrets kept and lies told in their therapy. \nDr. Farber is also the author of Self-disclosure in Psychotherapy\, two books focusing on burnout in the helping professions\, and a book on Carl Rogers (The Psychotherapy of Carl Rogers: Cases and Commentary) as well as a book called Rock ‘n Roll Wisdom: What Psychologically Astute Lyrics Can Teach About Life and Love. \nCONTINUING EDUCATION – 2 CE HOURS \nTeaching Method: \nPower-Point presentation with ample opportunity for questions and discussion. \nLearning Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to: \n1. Participants will be able to identify the most common lies that clients tell in psychotherapy.\n2. Participants will be able to identify common and specific motives for these lies.\n3. Participants will be able to identify specific practices that facilitate honest disclosure in psychotherapy. \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy is recognized by NY State Education Department’s State Board of Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Clinical Social Workers #SW-0063; Licensed Psychoanalysts #P-0027; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists #MFT-0040; Licensed Mental Health Counselors #MHC-0075; and Licensed Creative Arts Therapists #CAT-0028. \nA completed survey must be submitted after the meeting for 2 CE hours. \nWho should attend: Psychiatrists\, psychologists\, social workers\, psychoanalysts\, other mental health professionals\, nurses\, graduate students.

SUMMARY:CAPP MINI COURSE: APPLICATIONS OF PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC TESTING IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN\, PARENTS\, AND EDUCATORS
DESCRIPTION:Therapists\, would you like to enhance your work with children and parents? \nThe Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Presents \nA CAPP MINI COURSE: \nAPPLICATIONS OF PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC TESTING IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN\, PARENTS\, AND EDUCATORS \nThis three-hour mini-course on testing is open to our current candidates and to anyone else in the community who might be interested in learning more about testing and ways it can be used clinically. \nInstructor:\nJudith T. Moskowitz\, Ph.D. \nTime and dates: 7pm\, February 2\, 9\, and 23\, 2021.\nCost: $75 \nZoom \nSPACE IS LIMITED! \nRSVP to Irene Studwell istudwell@gmail.com\nor Jane Bloomgarden jwillbloom@gmail.com \n* * * * *\nA neuropsychological evaluation aspires to answer the question: “Who is this child?” It is a process analysis of the cognitive/intellectual\, academic\, and emotional factors that characterize a child’s functioning. In 9-12 hours (plus the time for intake and feedback)\, it provides a bird’s eye view that can help a therapist understand intellectual capacity\, areas of cognitive strengths and weaknesses\, and academic skills and deficits. With projective tests\, it also gives a snapshot of ego functioning\, defenses\, and issues related to anxieties\, mood regulation\, and social perception. The findings can shorten the introductory phase of treatment\, and give the therapist insights that would take months to discover. \nThis mini course aims to help clinicians understand what testing entails\, and how its results can be effectively relayed\, and help inform clinical interventions. Viewed as a major intervention (akin to “crisis intervention”)\, it has the potential to change the narrative\, and reframe the way in which a child is viewed – by parents\, teachers\, and self. A clinical approach is consistently used in relating to both parents and child\, and establishing a therapeutic alliance. \nCase material will be used to describe a variety of clinical presentations – what they mean\, how they can shed light upon the interaction between neurobiological and emotional factors\, and how they contribute to development. These factors may also impact parent/child relationships and identification patterns\, result in misinterpretations\, and possibly derail the acquisition of a child’s positive sense of self. The following are some areas that can be explored: (a) ADHD and executive functioning (b) Impact of language disorders (c) Pseudo-stupidity (d) Mood disorders and emotional dysregulation (e) Early identification of serious psychiatric disorders (f) The adopted child and “the black box”. \nDr. Moskowitz is a neuropsychologist based in Ardsley and a graduate of the Adelphi Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.

SUMMARY:WCSPP'S Diversity Film Forum Presents: Reactions\, Responses and Reflections on Spike Lee’s  Do the Right Thing
DESCRIPTION:WCSPP’S Diversity Film Forum Presents: \nReactions\, Responses and Reflections on Spike Lee’s \nDo the Right Thing \nFriday\, March 12th\, 2021 \n7:30 – 9:30pm \nPlease join us to discuss and de-construct Spike Lee’s ground-breaking\, provocative and evocative movie\, “Do the Right Thing” (1989). Filmed more than thirty years ago\, “Do the Right Thing” was described as coming “closer to reflecting the current state of race relations in America than any other movie of our time” (Roger Ebert). Sadly\, this film is more relevant than ever in 2021.\nTrailer:  https://youtu.be/muc7xqdHudI\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTaking place on one day\, on one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the hottest day of the summer\, “Do the Right Thing” takes us into the lives of several members of this community. Tensions build under the scorching summer heat. With an incredible cast\, great cinematography and direction\, we are drawn in\, right to the film’s controversial end. \nWe invite you to pay very close attention to all your reactions to this film and its characters. Take special notice of those moments when you feel uncomfortable. What can you learn about yourself and your biases? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: The movie will NOT be shown at the time of the presentation. Participants are responsible for watching the movie on their own beforehand: Do the Right Thing is available for free through your local library (there are 24 DVDs in circulation in Westchester) or it can be rented for $5 or less on Amazon Prime Video\, GooglePlay\, etc.).  \nRegistration fee: $20 (includes CE hours) \nTo register please go to the link below. SUMMARY:Open House -- Advanced Psychoanalytic & Foundations (March)
DESCRIPTION:Please Join Our VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE via ZOOM \nAbout Our Training Programs \nWCSPP offers two adult training programs: a two-year training experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy and also an intensive course of study and immersion into contemporary psychoanalysis. Each of these certificate programs provides excellent hands-on education and training in the theory and practice of psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis. The programs are designed to enhance a clinician’s understanding of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking in their work place and/or private practice. The training hones the candidate’s existing capacities to “see”\, feel\, and understand the multiple levels of meaningful human interaction in the consulting room. \nGrowing empirical evidence is clear that “deep therapeutic work”–like the kind offered at WCSPP–promotes change and growth in patients that is more substantial and longer lasting than in short-term\, singularly focused or behavioral treatments. \nThe Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program is a two-year program designed to provide candidates with a solid theoretical and clinical base in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A three-pronged approach is used\, which includes coursework\, personal therapy\, and consultation/supervision with a number of master clinicians who are a part of the WCSPP Faculty. Candidates will learn how to better recognize aspects of their work that are occurring outside the conscious awareness of the patient (or even the clinician) and how to use this expanded understanding in a dynamic\, transformative way. \nThe Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program is open to graduates of the Foundations Program and/or an equivalent program at another training institute. The Advanced course is an additional three-year program (beyond the Foundations program) that provides further in-depth training in psychoanalysis. The training consists of the concurrent participation in didactic course work\, supervised clinical work\, and a personal psychoanalysis. Such an intense immersion enables the candidate to transform experientially and deeply understand the empirical basis of theoretical formulations and to develop analytic skill in the conceptualization and execution of psychoanalytic work. \nWho is eligible and should apply? \nApplicants must be licensed Masters or Doctoral-level mental health professionals: M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Psy.D.\, LCSW\, NP\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC\, LMFT \nCE Credits will be offered for coursework.\nFinancial Aid is available for those who qualify. \nTimeline: \nRolling admissions with decisions made by July 30\, 2021 \nProgram begins September 2021 \nWe’d love to have you become part of our community… Come see what we are all about! \nRSVP For This Event!

SUMMARY:Diversity Book Group: James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time (WCSPP members only)
DESCRIPTION:Diversity Book Group Presents:  \nJames Baldwin’s  The Fire Next Time  \nA national bestseller\, Baldwin’s classic is as relevant and important today as it was in 1963.  You may have noticed the renewed dialogue about this powerful and important work.  Please join us in conversation.   \nDate: April 18\, 2021 \nTime: 10-11:30am \nLocation:  Zoom.  (link will be sent to those who RSVP) \nPlease RSVP to lesliegibsonphd@gmail.com \nWhen it first appeared in 1963\, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin’s early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice\, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two “letters\,” written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation\, that exhort Americans\, both black and white\, to attack the terrible legacy of racism. Described by The New York Times Book Review as “sermon\, ultimatum\, confession\, deposition\, testament\, and chronicle…all presented in searing\, brilliant prose\,” The Fire Next Time stands as a classic of our literature.  – Goodreads \n

SUMMARY:Zoom Into...Dreams (CE Credits Available)
DESCRIPTION:A WCSPP Community Forum\n\n\nPsychoanalysis In Action presents:\n\nZoom Into…Dreams\n\n\nCome to an experiential workshop to learn how to use dreams in psychotherapy.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Mark Finn will introduce participants to the relationship between psychoanalysis and dream work. The important value of the dream. \nDr. Gitlin will lead participants through an exploration of an anonymous dream. The process is one of “feeling one’s way into a dream.” The stories we tell ourselves\, the images we use to tell those stories\, all emerge in the language of the unconscious. The group process will allow us an entry into the unconscious of the dreamer. \nDr. Gitlin and Dr. Finn will speak about the value of exploring the unconscious. They will also discuss what dreams teach us about the language of the unconscious mind. \nThis will be followed by an open discussion and Q&A \nPlease register for this event here.

SUMMARY:Open House -- Advanced Psychoanalytic & Foundations (June)
\nRSVP For This Event!\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:The Nuts and Bolts of Beginning and Growing a Private Practice: Practical Considerations and Unconscious Currents
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Psychoanalysis in Action series. \nRegister here. \nThis workshop will address the practical considerations of dealing with insurance panels\, setting up an office\, marketing on the internet and within the community\, and establishing fees. It will then shift to more abstract issues of maintaining evenly suspended attention\, setting the frame\, answering direct personal questions\, and instilling a sense of curiosity. \nWilliam Behr\, LCSW is the former director of the Psychotherapy Training Program at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy\, as well as a faculty member and supervisor. He is also a supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. \nPsychoanalysis in Action is the beginning of our work to be a resource for a wider community of caregivers\, therapists and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the human experience. We hope to be available as external consultants to individual therapists and community organizations searching for opportunities to consider fresh ways to look at the therapeutic process. Our intent is to show how psychoanalytic principles can inform therapeutic work of all kinds\, in both private practice and agency settings.
