SUMMARY:Zoom Into...Dreams (CE Credits Available)
DESCRIPTION:A WCSPP Community Forum\n\n\nPsychoanalysis In Action presents:\n\nZoom Into…Dreams\n\n\nCome to an experiential workshop to learn how to use dreams in psychotherapy.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Mark Finn will introduce participants to the relationship between psychoanalysis and dream work. The important value of the dream. \nDr. Gitlin will lead participants through an exploration of an anonymous dream. The process is one of “feeling one’s way into a dream.” The stories we tell ourselves\, the images we use to tell those stories\, all emerge in the language of the unconscious. The group process will allow us an entry into the unconscious of the dreamer. \nDr. Gitlin and Dr. Finn will speak about the value of exploring the unconscious. They will also discuss what dreams teach us about the language of the unconscious mind. \nThis will be followed by an open discussion and Q&A \nPlease register for this event here.

SUMMARY:Open House -- Advanced Psychoanalytic & Foundations (June)
DESCRIPTION:Please Join Our VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE via ZOOM \nAbout Our Training Programs \nWCSPP offers two adult training programs: a two-year training experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy and also an intensive course of study and immersion into contemporary psychoanalysis. Each of these certificate programs provides excellent hands-on education and training in the theory and practice of psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis. The programs are designed to enhance a clinician’s understanding of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking in their work place and/or private practice. The training hones the candidate’s existing capacities to “see”\, feel\, and understand the multiple levels of meaningful human interaction in the consulting room. \nGrowing empirical evidence is clear that “deep therapeutic work”–like the kind offered at WCSPP–promotes change and growth in patients that is more substantial and longer lasting than in short-term\, singularly focused or behavioral treatments. \nThe Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program is a two-year program designed to provide candidates with a solid theoretical and clinical base in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A three-pronged approach is used\, which includes coursework\, personal therapy\, and consultation/supervision with a number of master clinicians who are a part of the WCSPP Faculty. Candidates will learn how to better recognize aspects of their work that are occurring outside the conscious awareness of the patient (or even the clinician) and how to use this expanded understanding in a dynamic\, transformative way. \nThe Advanced Psychoanalytic Training Program is open to graduates of the Foundations Program and/or an equivalent program at another training institute. The Advanced course is an additional three-year program (beyond the Foundations program) that provides further in-depth training in psychoanalysis. The training consists of the concurrent participation in didactic course work\, supervised clinical work\, and a personal psychoanalysis. Such an intense immersion enables the candidate to transform experientially and deeply understand the empirical basis of theoretical formulations and to develop analytic skill in the conceptualization and execution of psychoanalytic work. \nWho is eligible and should apply? \nApplicants must be licensed Masters or Doctoral-level mental health professionals: M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Psy.D.\, LCSW\, NP\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC\, LMFT \nCE Credits will be offered for coursework.\nFinancial Aid is available for those who qualify. \nTimeline: \nRolling admissions with decisions made by July 30\, 2021 \nProgram begins September 2021 \nWe’d love to have you become part of our community… Come see what we are all about! \nRSVP For This Event!\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:The Nuts and Bolts of Beginning and Growing a Private Practice: Practical Considerations and Unconscious Currents
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Psychoanalysis in Action series. \nRegister here. \nThis workshop will address the practical considerations of dealing with insurance panels\, setting up an office\, marketing on the internet and within the community\, and establishing fees. It will then shift to more abstract issues of maintaining evenly suspended attention\, setting the frame\, answering direct personal questions\, and instilling a sense of curiosity. \nWilliam Behr\, LCSW is the former director of the Psychotherapy Training Program at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy\, as well as a faculty member and supervisor. He is also a supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. \nPsychoanalysis in Action is the beginning of our work to be a resource for a wider community of caregivers\, therapists and anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the human experience. We hope to be available as external consultants to individual therapists and community organizations searching for opportunities to consider fresh ways to look at the therapeutic process. Our intent is to show how psychoanalytic principles can inform therapeutic work of all kinds\, in both private practice and agency settings.

SUMMARY:Annual Conference - The Efficacy of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: A Lecture and Clinical Workshop. Keynote Speaker: Jonathan Shedler\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/167919326225 \nWCSPP Annual Conference\nTHE EFFICACY OF PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY: A LECTURE AND CLINICAL WORKSHOP \n4 CE CREDITS AVAILABLE \nKeynote speaker: Jonathan Shedler\, PhD \nModerated by: John Turtz\, PhD \nDr. Shedler will conduct live supervision sessions with Melissa Capozzi\, LCSW and Matthew Korner\, PsyD \nOverview\nPsychodynamic therapy is an evidence-based treatment. In the first half of the lecture — based on the internationally acclaimed article\, The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy — Dr. Shedler will describe the seven core features of contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy in clear\, jargon-free language. \nDr. Shedler will discuss scientific evidence for the benefits of psychodynamic therapy and how it compares to other evidence-based treatments like CBT and antidepressant medication. Dr. Shedler will also describe how the active ingredients of all effective psychotherapies draw on (often unacknowledged) psychodynamic principles\, such as enhancing self-knowledge\, identifying problematic relationship patterns\, and addressing these patterns in the “here and now” of the therapy relationship. \nThe second half of the conference program will have a practical\, hands-on clinical focus\, building on concepts from Dr. Shedler’s lecture. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of contemporary psychodynamic therapy through clinical case presentations by workshop participants with case discussion\, “live” clinical supervision\, and role playing to demonstrate clinical interventions. Dr. Shedler will emphasize the role of clinical case formulation as a road map to effective psychodynamic treatment. \nPresenters\nAmerican psychologist Jonathan Shedler\, PHD is known internationally as an author\, consultant\, and master clinician and teacher\, and is the 2021 recipient of IPA’s “Extraordinarily Meritorious Service to the International Psychoanalytic Association” award. \nHis article The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy won worldwide acclaim for firmly establishing psychoanalytic therapy as an evidence-based treatment. \nDr. Shedler’s research and writing are shaping contemporary views of personality syndromes and their treatment. He is author of numerous scientific and scholarly articles\, creator of the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) for personality diagnosis and clinical case formulation\, and co-author of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2). \nHe has more than 25 years’ experience teaching and supervising psychologists\, psychiatrists\, and psychoanalysts. \nDr. Shedler lectures internationally\, leads workshops for professional audiences\, consults to U.S. and international government agencies\, and provides expert clinical consultation to mental health professionals worldwide. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California\, San Francisco (UCSF)\, faculty member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis\, and Consulting Supervisor at California Pacific Medical Center. \nJohn Turtz\, PHD is teaching and supervisory faculty at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (WCSPP). He is the Co-director of the Foundations and Advanced Programs in Psychoanalysis and was former Director of the Couples Therapy Program at WCSPP. He is faculty\, supervisor\, and former Co-director at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. In addition\, Dr. Turtz is faculty at the New York Medical College and is in private practice in Larchmont and Manhattan. \nMelissa Capozzi\, LCSW is currently a candidate in the Advanced Psychoanalytic Program at WCSPP and is a recent graduate of the Foundations Program. Melissa studied creative writing and film at Pace University and received her Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. For the past five years she has worked as a school-based therapist\, providing adolescents individual and group counseling. She sees patients privately in Westchester. \nMatthew Korner\, PSYD is a graduate of the advanced psychoanalytic training program at WCSPP. He is a Supervising Psychologist at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology\, Yeshiva University. SUMMARY:Reclaiming Pleasure: A Clinical Imperative for Sexual Healing and Passionate Living
DESCRIPTION:(Sign up using link at bottom of page) \nThe word “survivor” has emerged strongly within our cultural lexicon due to more forward-facing\, high-profile cases of sexual perpetration\, thus establishing a social declaration for sexual healing and empowerment. We can no longer avoid hard truths—sexual abuse\, assault\, harassment and rape happen to one out of every six women and one out of every thirty-three men in the United States (rainn.org)—and the aftermath of these traumas include the burden of being believed in addition to a survivors’ often solitary journey toward mind/body health. Repairing what has been lost to sexual trauma is necessary\, even vital\, to the process of recovery\, but it’s not enough. Surviving is the beginning though certainly not a sufficient or acceptable end. \nThis presentation explores what comes next in the process of a survivor’s recovery. Practitioners will learn how to help patients shift from surviving to thriving—from simply existing to fully living—by reimagining what their individual and relational evolutions entail. It draws from contemporary research in sex therapy and somatic psychology\, offering theories and tools to ground survivors in concepts of safety\, security\, and trust\, but also reaching further into the necessary terrain of vitality\, freedom\, healthy relationships and fulfilling sex. Through specific somatic sex therapy protocols and case studies\, practitioners will learn to guide patients on a holistic journey toward the rediscovery of eroticism\, both for themselves and in their intimate relationships. \nPresenter\n\nHolly Richmond\, Ph.D.\, is a Somatic Psychotherapist\, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) and Certified Sex Therapist (CST). This unique combination of credentials enables her to focus on clients’ cognitive processes as well as mind-body health. She works with women\, men\, couples and gender-diverse individuals on relationship and sexuality issues\, offering sex therapy and sexual health coaching nationally and internationally. Her treatment specialties include low libido\, sexual dysfunction\, compulsive sexuality (often called “addiction”)\, desire discrepancies in couples\, recovery from sexual assault and abuse\, and alternative/non-traditional sexual expression. Her newly released book Reclaiming Pleasure: A Sex-Positive Guide for Moving Past Sexual Trauma and Living a Passionate Life (New Harbinger\, Oct. 2021) is an innovative look at both somatic and psychological factors in survivor’s erotic recovery.\n\nFacilitator\nAviva Gitlin\, Psy.D.\, is a clinical psychologist with advanced training in psychoanalysis and couples therapy.  She works in private practice (23 years) and teaches courses on Dreams and on Sexuality at both WCSPP and Adelphi’s Psychoanalytic Postgraduate Program.  Dr. Gitlin’s rich understanding of how unconscious experience formulates our perceptions\, understandings\, and behavior informs the work she does.  She works with adult individuals and couples\, helping people create increased empathy for their own experiences and the experiences of others.

SUMMARY:Scientific Meeting: Psychoanalysis' and Psychotherapy's Troubled Encounter with Gay Men: How Our Disciplines Lost Their Way\, and How They May Yet Find It.
DESCRIPTION:Using historical analysis\, Dr. Schwartz will offer an understanding of the sources of the devaluing of gay men in psychoanalytic and psychological theory.  He situates the contradiction of our disciplines’ theory and values that is inherent in the disparagement of male homosexuality\, in the larger context of the history of xenophobia in the United States.  This includes special attention to the negative contributions of Sandor Rado\, among other mid-century psychoanalysts.  Dr. Schwartz concludes by suggesting that the antidote to the development of such xenophobic trends in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is three-fold: (1) Thoroughly include the history of our discipline in training (2) Always give consideration to relevant scientific findings in the development of psychoanalytic theory and psychotherapeutic practice and (3) Re-engage the tradition of social criticism as part of training. \nPresenter \n\nDavid Schwartz\, PhD.\, is a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Westchester. He is a graduate of the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and has been writing about sexuality and gender for the past thirty-five years. \nDiscussant \nEric Mendelsohn\, PhD.\, teaches and supervises at WCSPP\, in the Four Year Analytic and the National Training Programs at NIP\, in the Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at Adelphi University\, and he teaches at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis\, Washington\, DC.  Eric writes about the patient-therapist relationship and about the therapist’s subjective experience. His clinical practice is in Hartsdale\, NY.

SUMMARY:Virtual Open House: Foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Advanced Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nWCSPP offers two adult training programs: a two-year training experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy and also an intensive course of study and immersion into contemporary psychoanalysis. Each of these certificate programs provides excellent hands-on education and training in the theory and practice of psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis. The programs are designed to enhance a clinician’s understanding of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking in their workplace and/or private practice. The training hones the candidate’s existing capacities to “see”\, feel\, and understand the multiple levels of meaningful human interaction in the consulting room. \nGrowing empirical evidence is clear that “deep therapeutic work”–like the kind offered at WCSPP–promotes change and growth in patients that is more substantial and longer lasting than in short-term\, singularly focused\, or behavioral treatments. The training consists of concurrent participation in didactic course work\, supervised clinical work\, and a personal psychoanalysis. Such an intense immersion enables the candidate to transform experientially and deeply understand the empirical basis of theoretical formulations and to develop analytic skill in the conceptualization and execution of psychoanalytic work. \nWho is eligible and should apply? \nApplicants must be licensed Masters or Doctoral-level mental health professionals: M.D.\, Ph.D.\, Psy.D.\, LCSW\, NP\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMHC\, LMFT \nCE Credits will be offered for coursework. \nFinancial Aid is available for those who qualify. \nTimeline: \nRolling admissions with decisions made by July 30\, 2022 \nProgram begins September 2022 \n——————————- \nWe’d love to have you become part of our community… Come see what we are all about!

SUMMARY:Winnicott's Sensibility
DESCRIPTION:A discussion by D.W. Winnicott scholar Dodi Goldman PhD in a Zoom talk titled “Winnicott’s Moon”\n\n\n\n\nPlease sign up using link at bottom\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nFor our inaugural event in a new series\, we welcome recognized author and psychoanalyst: \nDODI GOLDMAN\, PHD\, WITH THE PRESENTATION “WINNICOTT’S MOON” \nWinnicott’s Moon” marks the 50th anniversary of the death of D.W. Winnicott\, arguably one of the most creative psychoanalysts since Freud. This talk offers a portrait of his sensibility\, which appeals to some but confounds or even irritates others. Sensibility is different than theory. Theories can be potentially useful even if eventually proven wrong. Sensibilities\, in contrast\, are neither right nor wrong; they are aesthetically and emotionally resonant or not. The title\, “Winnicott’s Moon\,” refers to a poem Winnicott penned at the very end of his life in response to the American moon landing. A longer version of the talk appears as the concluding chapter of a forthcoming edited book\, “Winnicott in America\,” published by the Winnicott Trust and Oxford U. Press. \nFriday\, April 8th at 7:00pm – 9:00pm \nAdmission with CE hours: $45 \nLive on Zoom! \nDr. Goldman is a training and supervising analyst and on faculty at White. He authored “In Search of the Real: the origins and originality of D.W. Winnicott” and is the former book review editor of the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
